OCTOBER 10 / More blowback on Georgsson-gate

"CORY" on "Joke" and "Ethics"

For some of us, at least, that's the entire point of Georgsson-gate. The Chron needs to openly disclose the donation by an editorial board member who plays a role in writing anonymous editorials.

Yes, there are calls by some for her to be fired. I don't agree with that.

What should happen is that the Chron should make it known that a writer who may have had in-put into a variety of county editorials has gone on the record in support of the [Democratic challenger of the incumbent Republican county judge].

It's the same thing that we've been hammering on in regards to Jeff Cohen's wife as well. Disclosure.

So far the Chron has been silent about the newspaper's political leanings. This would all go away if the paper would just disclose publicly and be done with it.

Instead they continue to hide under the false shroud that the editorial board is "neither right nor left."

UNCA D's response:

Firing is the answer, but not solely for G-gate.

She needs to be fired because her opinions are so far to the left that they are rarely interesting or useful, because they are mostly wrong, and because she hurts the newspaper with its mostly center-right readership.

And she needs firing because if her continued presence on the editorial board will undermine the authority of the new opinion director.

If she cannot be fired for this, she cannot be fired for anything. And if she cannot be fired, she will, in effect, be the co-opinion director. Mr. Wilburn's authority will reach only to other staff members and to issues that do not interest Ms. Georgsson.

With two captains fighting for the helm, the Chronicle will never be able to steer the ship of opinion back to the middle of the stream, assuming it may ever wish to do so.

Sometimes you fire people for the reason at hand, not the perfect reason that has yet to present itself. This is an opportunity that will not come again.

The Chronicle should take it.

UPDATE: Call it a buyout. Call it a resignation. Do whatever it takes. Just do it.
