I WILL vote for Gene Locke. Why? Because . . .
. . . the Service Employees International Union has endorsed his opponent, Ms. Parker. Worse, she's proud of it, "honored" by it.
The SEIU is, by definition, a perfect coincident indicator for politicians who favor the interests of public and semi-public employees over those of mere voters and taxpayers. SEIU is certainly President Obama's favorite union.
Wikipedia has a sympathetic entry. For a critical view of the thuggish union, go here.
I'm no fan of Mr. Locke. He's a big lib too. He also lawyered Houston's annexation raid on Kingwood, which did far more harm than good to my poor livable forest.
But here's the difference: Ms. Parker hopes to ride into office on the union's back; Mr. Locke will enter office, if he wins, with an SEIU burr under his saddle.
Count on this: Members of the union will vote.
A Parker victory will set up a perverse feedback loop, the ultimate effect of which would be to pump money out of taxpayer pockets and into the pockets of union members (small amounts) and union bosses (much, much more), who in turn would pump money into the campaigns of sympathic pols.
That is probably the best reason.
