JUST ABOLISH all tariffs and most other barriers to entry of foreign good. Ignore the other countries. Let them do what they will.
It's a myth that the benefits of free trade depend solely on whether other countries open their door to American goods. Or that all trade liberalization must be tit-for-tat. Or that the goal of trade law is a "level playing field," which is more a political idea than an economic idea.
Our only real goal should be American prosperity. If we just do the right thing and let the chips fall where they may, the chips will fall in our laps.
Would this form of free trade hurt some industries and workers? Sure. So help'em out. Just don't help them out with protectionism, which hurts everyone to help a few.
