MAY 28 / Houston newspaper supports cap and trade

THE HOUSTON Chronicle, a newspaper that serves the executives and worker bees of the petroleum and petrochemical industries, a newspaper in a relatively prosperous state that generally welcomes investors and those who choose to work (contra: see California), a newspaper with a traditionalist, largely conservative readership . . . yes, that newspaper last week climbed aboard the solar-powered choo-choo of President Obama's imagination and endorsed cap and trade.

UNCA DARRELL's first post was May 24, 2008 -- an image of ephemeral folk art in Smut Eye, Alabama, soon followed by this image, this one, and yet another.

These were experiments, to see how this blogging thing worked. In the next year I would post more than 700 times, mostly about journalism and politics. Now it's time to evaluate the year and decide whether to continue.

THE CHRONICLE tried. It really did. But our local editorial board is simply incapable of celebrating Memorial Day for what it is -- a time of remembrance, of honor and respect -- for those who died in our nation's military service. Instead . . .
