Garrison in the News:
Bart Reneau, president of the GISD school board, quoted in Jo Ann Barton, "GHS students and board president speak on open forum." I spent the better half of this year . . . trying to bring peace between divisions in the community. While it seems the effort was in vain, I have peace about it because the Bible tells me . . . that "Blessed are the peacemakers . . . ."
Filler, "Things to Be Thankful For." The good, green earth beneath our feet, / The air we [breathe], the food we eat . . . .
Jo Ann Barton, "Alive and worth the drive!" (a history of a local black church (COGIC) and its pastor, Rev. Clarence Yarborough). Black people always had a rich Christian faith. Their faith and trust in God kept them going during hard times and struggles. All the churches were the foundation of the home and community. God's spirit has been alive and well since the day of Pentecost.
Betty Swearingen, "Reflecting Out Loud." Sometimes when I get to thinking of the past, I realize how lucky we were. The cares and ills of the world were not discussed in front of us, [and] we enjoyed our childhood . . . . We did not realize until we were much older that there were perils in this world, but today we are bombarded with them."
Darrell Pollard, Statement as Candidate for the GISD School Board. I am the pastor of Arlam Baptist Church, and a chicken and cattle farmer. . . . I am not for spending one penny for wants and wishes if doing so would mean raising taxes.
Laci Stokes, "High School Happenin's." We are winding down another school year. The baseball and softball teams only have a few games left. . . . I guess that is about it for this week. I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine. I know I sure am!
Gary Corley, "Supporting Our Troops." Today, liberals have slandered and talked down about the Americans who participated in the Tea Parties all across this great land. Some of the trash that arrogantly call themselves commentators and journalists even resorted to filthy gutter innuendoes to refer to the Tea Parties as . . . a sex act that is not worth describing. This arrogance of these is beneath contempt . . . .
Joyce Dorris, "Out in Arlam." Monday I made an orange cake with cheesecake frosting. Stacey came to see our new roof. He also came to attend the funeral of Marie Scoggins out at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. I met Viola Garrett Reed out there and was really happy to see our grandchildren. James Corey (Gem) was all dressed in his Marine Blues. He is stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station at Camp LeJune, North Carolina. He got leave for his granny's funeral. We took the little baby covers that I'd made for Blythe and Chad's baby that is due in July. It is always good to see our kids. Stacey had to rush back to Orange. He had a building to be moved Monday evening.
"Rear View Mirror: Half Century Ago, April 1959: Diana Fountain and Maxie Cardwell to Go to Spelling Bee." Diana Gayle Fountain, seventh grade student, won the PTA $10.00 award in the spelling contest in the High School Gym this week. Maxie Cardwell, eighth grade student, was runner-up. . . . The two girls will enter the countywide Spelling Bee in Nacogdoches next Monday night . . . .
Advertisement, "Stone Fort Camp To Host Living History Event." The Sons of Confederate Veterans . . . will be hosting a "rally around the flag day" beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009. . . . Activities include a Confederate memorial service; all you can eat BBQ, howitzer-firing demonstrations, period uniforms, living history exhibit and good fellowship.
Advertisement, "Congratulations Ron Adkison, 2008-2009 Super Lawyer." Garrison in the News takes great pride in congratulating Ron Adkison . . . for being recognized among the Rising Stars in Texas. 2008-2009 Super Lawyers! "Forever Be Bulldogs!"
