Mixing those pesky metaphors

To run to ground is to hunt or chase something to the point of capture or kill. But threads don't run, do they? Threads are pulled. Once again, the TelePrompTer let Mr. Obama down.

Only 49 percent of "tax units" actually paid federal income taxes in 2009. So estimated the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation last week. Other "tax units" either paid nothing (22 percent) or got a check (30 percent), a "refund" for taxes that were never paid in the first place.
