AT THIS HOUR, Real Clear Politics -- the only polling authority followed by Unca D -- has Mr. Obama's job approval at 40.6 percent. That's the first time since he took office that the president has dropped below 41 percent. [UPDATE: It's 40.4 percent at midday Wednesday.]

Exactly one year ago, days after he had won reelection with the help of a lawless IRS, fictional unemployment numbers, negative campaigning, and lies about Mr. Romney . . .

Back in the day, the newspaper boycotted or mocked all American civic and religious holidays, up to and including the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Recent years have seen a welcome change. A few editorials -- notably last year's Thanksgiving essay -- have been superb. Seriously.

Today is Veterans Day, and the paper tried to do the right thing. It just couldn't pull it off. The best thing about today's piece is . . .

NOVEMBER 9 / President Obama's job approval is not . . .

. . . at an all-time low. Based on Real Clear Politics's influential poll of the polls, his approval yesterday was 42.4 percent, still a tick higher than the  all-time low of October 2011 -- 42 percent. 

Several individual polls have dropped the president's job approval into the 39s. For the moment, we must treat them as outliers. In time, however, other polls may move . . .
