. . . director of subscription sales to resign.
Mr. David Lee
Director of Subscription Sales
4747 Southwest Freeway
Houston, Texas 77027–9844
Dear Mr. Lee:
Thank you for your kind form letter of indeterminate date offering a discounted subscription to The Houston Chronicle. I love newspapers. I was a newspaper reporter in the selfsame building where you are now employed. I would enjoy few things more than to resume my subscription.
Unfortunately, I cannot do so without the risk that even one penny of my money might find its way into the salary check for some member of your editorial board. So long as you employ the folks who now populate that board, this shall never happen.
I enclose a few writings on why I am opposed to the incumbent board. There are, trust me, many more reasons.
Not only will I not subscribe, but I also will continue to urge friends and acquaintances to join me. We should withhold our money from a newspaper that lacks respect for us, our values, and our ideas about politics, economics, culture, religion, and civilization.
Unless this board also speaks for you, I suggest you also consider joining us. Use your power. I can see the headline: “Chronicle circulation director resigns, cancels subscription / Protests paper’s editorial policy / ‘Out of touch with Texas, reality,’ he says.”
Respectfully yours,
Darrell Hancock
